Challenges of Internet penetration in rural areas – Nitish Kumar

Today with the advancement in technology, we are dependent on Internet more and more. Without internet all walks of life will be affected Banking, TV, media and so many will be hanged and almost life will come to a standstill. In urban areas the available bandwidth of the internet is good enough for our daily activities, but in rural areas bandwidth is not enough, we cannot do activities like: Banking, Watching movies, playing games, office works etc.

In rural areas, the bandwidth of the internet in not good is due to less number of towers or may be lack of proper service maintenance.Generally towers are available in those areas which were developed a long ago, and after that very few number of towers were installed that may be the cause for the lower bandwidth in the newly or recently developed rural areas. A proper care must be taken for the increment of the internet speed or bandwidth in these areas, as rural areas are also developing day by day. Also due to this rural people are not able to get benefit of the services which are provided through the internet.

Usually, you hear internet has just been shaped. But you don’t know what does this really means? Internet Shaping is reducing the internet bandwidth by your Internet Service Provider(ISPs) when customer has exceeded their monthly/daily limit, Generally many ISP drops your Internet speed to around 80kpbs and you have to wait for speed till further renewal of pack. At this speed, your device is connected to the internet but you cannot do many day to day online activities like watching movies, playing games, Office work over VPN connection and many more. You can only able to get Emails, WhatsApp messages and other activities which requires low internet speed.

From customer point of view, there are a number of benefits to shaping versus other alternatives:-

  1. You know how much you are paying for the internet every months.
  2. Even at slower speed you still can to so many other activities like Whatsapp messaging, Email chatting.
  3. Pay as per your internet usages. If you are less heavy internet user than your neighbour then why should you pay the same amount that your neighbour is paying.

Of course, internet shaping can present some challenges to heavy internet. As shaped connection usually prevent users from streaming video like Netflix, Youtube, as well as remote desktop connection, online gaming and software updates. If you rely heavily on high bandwidth activities for entertainment(or work), then shaping might be a less suitable alternative than higher quotas or additional data charges.

Things to care to Improve Internet Connection :–

  • If 4g router are available in your area upgrade to 4g router which is now available at very low cost and higher speed in comparison to 2g/3g router.
  • Use of fitted antenna in your router which are more stable for internet connection and can help to create better range and coverage.
  • Don’t hard reset your routers frequently which we usually do if our internet connection is not working properly, even restarting can resolve the issue or its better to contact your service provider if they are available.
  • Sometime position of routers also play a vital role to improve our internet and wifi connection. Usually placing router near device like TV , Microwaves etc leads to decrease in the performance of Internet connection.
  • Regularly contact with your Internet Service Provider to know better service plan and service running in your area. As unless you ask , your plan cannot be upgraded.
