IoT & IPv6 ESSENTIAL WORKSHOP

IoT &IPv6 ESSENTIAL WORKSHOP

FD

3rd and 4th September, 2015: The main motive of taking up this training session can simply be defined as a step towards making the world we live in today an absolute network area where minute of the minute things are controlled and operated by our command. It can be command or just the sensors that needs to get activated for objects around us to operate. Internet Society Kolkata, a global internet community has come up with the innovative adventitious idea of training the upcoming future generation about the norms of IOT, vertical markets, the protocols of communication.

The workshop started by Mr. Anupam Agrawal, chair of ISOC by a small introduction on what exactly will be the event on. What are the things and contents that the workshop will deal with? Later on the whole seminar was conducted by the Vice-President Membership of ISOC Mr. Anand Raje. The participant then introduced themselves to every other. The venue was huge and spacious. The lights were perfect for the projector. The sound system was even perfect. Before the start of the seminar there was a tea break after the introduction so that people would be freshened up. The theoretical part was dealt at the beginning to make people get a clear view of the workshop. Then we had the lunch session which was enjoyed by all as it was of Indian Cuisine and in Kolkata its majority best. We were back on the workshop with some more relevant information about IoT AND Raspberry Pie. Internet Of Things is basically an process where not only individual but also living and non-living object are giving an unique and different identification code which can be accessed through wireless network. So the presence of too much human or machine are lessened. If we can bring about the presence of IOT in day to day business which would activate the sensors to connect to the node and finally the gateway were the unique IP Address is present links to the cloud opens the door to interchange and exchange data communication within. Smart system and Internet of Things are processed by Sensors and actuators that leads to connectivity and finally combined by bi-directional system that integrate people and process. Things get more interesting when the devices starts the compound application within their verticals.

OUI

The kit was then given to every group formed by the participants containing of 4-5 people who was instructed to connect it to the laptop. The whole of IoT is based on its technology and architectural structure. The ambience intelligence would be embedded, personalized, anticipatory, and context aware. Electronics would responds built in a sensitive environment. The communication flow that takes place between sensors are actuators are in a systematic and simplified manner. After collecting information from sensors it preprocess it and send it to the cloud. The cloud in turn receives user input, process with ambient info and triggers the actuators

LL.The Raspberry Pie was the greatest importance here. So to get more detailed information about Raspberry Pie a check on this link is very useful https://www.raspberrypi.org

On the second day of the workshop we had a different room which was quite cozy and comfortable as it was of little smaller size than the previous one so people could interact in a better way. There were new members who missed out on the first day due to some unavoidable reasons but was very eager to attend the workshop.  So we couldn’t say them no. For quick brush up of the new members Mr. Anand Raje started with highlighting the main points of yesterday’s workshop session. After a few queries sorted by Mr. Raje we had Mr. Anupam Agrawal with his views and suggestion about the workshop. He then introduced us to Mr. Abhijan Bhattacharya scientist at Tata Consultancy Services. He shared some of is his experience he had while visiting some other countries regarding internet of things. The way had responded to his idea and thoughts about internet.

DD

The second day workshop was totally on practical terms. Participants had their Raspberyy Pie kits ready connected to their laptop and was ready to use. Then we had a break for lunch and the presence of Chinese cuisine delighted everyone. After the lunch, Mr. Anand had videos and photos that guided everyone to demonstrate it on their laptop. Eventually the workshop was coming to an end. Whatever doubts and questions fellow participants had brought up and Mr. Anand solved it out.

IETF – Indian Participation

The Internet we know is primarily defined by the mentioned attributes with an objective of keeping the core working and constant while edge of the network continues to grow. Internet allows for:

  • Different Players at Different Layers
  • Functional Interoperability
  • Voluntary adoption of Technology
  • Bottom Up Innovation
  • Collaboration where needed.

In this process standardization plays a big role because just for browsing the web, there is a strong interoperability requirements which if not met will make Internet cease to exist.

BROWSING THE WEB

  • 802.11 //– IEEE — TCP/IP — IETF
  • URL //– IETF — BGP — IETF
  • NAT //– Propriet — HTTP — IETF
  • CSS //– W3C — PNG — IETF
  • HTML //– W3C/ISO — MPEG — ISO/IEC
  • XML //– W3C — ADSL — ITU-T

The Standardization helps in meeting interoperability requirements and also enables the following:

  • Collective Empowerment
  • Voluntary Adoption
  • Availability
  • Adherence to Principles
  • Cooperation

The IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) is the Internet’s premier standards-making body, responsible for the development of protocols used in IP-based networks. IETF participants represent an international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers involved in the technical operation of the Internet and the continuing evolution of Internet architecture.

The IETF Trust was created by the Internet Society and the Corporation for National Research Initiatives as settlors, the Internet Engineering Task Force and the Initial Trustees on December 15, 2005.The IETF Trust has been requested by the IESG and RFC Editor in November 2014 to provide a license in cases where RFCs contain Templates. The Trustees propose modifying the Trust Legal Provisions (TLP) based upon a need to extract and fill in text from RFCs that contain Templates. The change enables specific text in an RFC that is designated as a Template to be subject to a new provision in the TLP that says that extraction and modification are authorized.

The IETF Administrative Support Activity (IASA) as an activity housed within the Internet Society (ISOC). It defines the roles and responsibilities of the IETF Administrative Oversight Committee (IAOC), the IETF Administrative Director (IAD), and ISOC in the fiscal and administrative support of the IETF standards process. It also defines the membership and selection rules for the IAOC. The process by which the members of the IAB and IESG, and some members of the IAOC, are selected, confirmed, and recalled is specified in RFC 7437.

The IETF’s standards development work is organized into 8 Areas. Each Area has 1 or more Area Directors (ADs), which together comprise the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG). The IESG is responsible for technical management of IETF activities, the Internet standards process, and for the actions associated with entry into and movement along the Internet “standards track,” including final approval of specifications as Internet Standards and publication as an RFC

Screenshot_9

within each Area there is multiple Working Groups (WG) . Each WG has one or more chairs who manage the work, and a written charter defining what the work is and when it is due. There are 129 WGs. The WGs produce Internet Drafts (I-Ds) which often lead to the publication of an Internet standard as an RFC. People interested in particular technical issues join the mailing list of a WG and occasionally attend one or more of the three IETF meetings held every year.

IESG is considering some major changes in the IETF process and structure for balancing the need of timely response to industry and workload on Area Directors. Some major changes on the cards in IETF are:

MERGING OF UPPER LAYER PROTOCOL AREAS – Merge the APP, RAI, and TSV areas into one combined Network Applications (NAPP) area. From March 2015-March 2016, this combined area would be overseen by the five remaining ADs from APP, RAI, and TSV, with some redistribution of WG shepherding responsibilities among them to balance workloads. DISPATCH, TSVWG, and APPSAWG would continue to function much as they currently do.

ADDING A THIRD RTG Area Director- The load in the RTG area is currently unsustainably high. The placement of a third AD will have the effect of spreading that load such that the time requirement may now be more consistent with the work loads of ADs in other areas.

SHIFTING OF WG RESPONSIBILITY TO OUT-OF-AREA ADS – There are numerous instances where the constituency of a WG exists in a particular IETF area, but the most appropriate AD for that work happens to be in a different area, or where the ADs in the area are simply overloaded
and an AD outside of the area is perfectly capable of managing the work. To address these possibilities, the IESG is moving towards a model where a WG can exist in one area, but its shepherding AD comes from another area. This flexibility will allow the IESG to apply its skills where they can be of most use while still keeping related WGs together within an area. The IESG proposes to experiment with this approach initially by shifting to out-of-area ADs for RADEXT, DIME, LMAP, and ANIMA, perhaps with another few WGs to follow.

There has been participation by Indians in IETF and the state of affairs is as below as compiled from various sources.

An interactive session with LEA Officials on Cyber Crime

As part of Internet Society Kolkata Chapter ongoing outreach activities we involve with different stakeholders for awareness, advisory and technical support. The lecture is part of the courses organized by Central Detective Training School, Kolkata for different LEA officials on Cyber Crime. The topic of lecture was ‘Investigation of Internet Fraud and Case Studies’ held on 11-02-2015. Investigation of Internet fraud being a vast domain, we have covered it from general awareness point of discussion to very specific cases which can be bottom line in solving many similar nature of cases. From the discussion it was evident that the majority of incidents are happening due to lack of awareness among users about the secured uses of Internet Online Services, Credit Cards etc.

LEA agencies are facing problem in reaching cyber criminal’s machines or point of operations due to the use of anonymous proxies and other tools available in market. The situation is becoming more alarming when the next evolution IoT (Internet of Things) is knocking the doors. This lack of general awareness in one hand and lighting speed adoption of Internet and its services on the other hand is creating a scary situation and LEA officials are having tough time responding to new age crime situations.

The session was interactive and we discussed basic security principals and protocols like https, digital signatures, and encryption methodologies and even practiced some probing techniques. We went ahead to understand how internet works. An insight into BGP routers behind Internet backbone by using some publicly accessible BGP Looking Glasses.

The concerns and suggestions from the session are as follows:

    1. Lack of awareness about secured uses of online services among users are reasons of majority of incidents.
    2. Online services like e-commerce, e-payments should maintain proper use activity logs and respond to the lawful investigation of fraudulent activities.
    3. Continuous training of all the stakeholders in cyber-crime investigation life cycle.

E Connect North East – Guwahati Edition

The goal of this seminar e-Connecting North East is to promote healthy development of Internet in North East and make it an active part of the world internet community. This is expected to be a link among relevant internet communities, enterprises and organizations for benefitting the whole industry, to protect internet user’s interests, to strengthen communication and coordination between communities and governments, improve the implementation of relevant policies and regulations, promote internet application and public awareness. The reliance on Internet has increased both in the country and in the North East states of India in how we conduct our day to day lives. Though technology has come to remove the barriers of last mile access, thereby reducing the access issues to a larger extent but there are access issues in North East, which needs to be talked about, debated and actions taken against each one of them. The seminar is an attempt to bring the issues on to the table and to the forefront of all, active in policy making so that the issues are differentiated in the context of North East and dealt properly. There are opportunities to participate in the management of Internet’s key technical resources and policy development, wherein the academia and students can play a role and a significant objective of the seminar is to create public awareness around it so that Increased and effective participation creates an opportunity to reframe the debate at the international level, national level and the regional level. The business from North East is having a large stake in ensuring that the policy debate about issues with an Internet dimension taken care off. It needs to be ensured that while efforts are being made to use it to solve broader social issues like education and security, the business requirements, are not undermined. The seminar in Guwahati is the first of the series of seminars on this subject being organized by Internet Society Kolkata Chapter with the help of Business & their Chambers, National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) & ISPAI, in each of the North Eastern State. The learning from each of the seminars in the form of interventions, discussions and points raised will be synthesized and a report will be submitted to all stakeholders including government for their action.
